Music from the past

I am amazed that this is 2007 and ONJ will be staging her first ever concert in Singapore! We used to listen to her records at my grandma's house when we were kids. Ok, let me see, who else from days of yore has yet to hold their first ever concert in Singapore? Have Billy Joel and Elton John ever performed here?

I only remember attending two English language pop/rock concerts. One was the Osmonds' and the other, believe it or not - and much later in life - Paula Abdul's!

As someone who grew up watching Donny and Marie show, I thought the Osmond concert was great. I remember reluctantly leaving National Stadium while they were singing 'I Believe' because my dad said we had better leave so that we wouldn't get caught in the human crush at the very end of the show. Anyway, I found out recently that Donny Osmond is still performing!

Incidentally, I used to have this Donny and Marie plastic thermos flask. Some of you will know the kind I'm talking about. They are about 13-15cm in diameter, maybe 18-20cm tall (I'm bad at estimating) and have pictures printed on the body. The coloured screw-on cover has a little handle so it can be used as a cup. Of course the cover was purple.

As for Paula's concert, I'm not even sure why I spent my money on it as I'm not a fan of hers. You know how people say that concerts here are so mild and I've heard of people being told to sit and behave when they get up to dance. Well, the strange thing is I remember that my friend D, who is a dancer (i.e. not a dancer by profession but someone who dances), stood up to dance, I stood up half the time, not dancing (and D was looking at me with this 'eh, what's wrong with you' look), and many people around us were dancing and jumping and no security personnel told us to sit.

Going back to ONJ, I'm sure they won't have problems selling the tickets, though she should have come 20 years ago or something. Look at how successful ticket sales are for singers like Cliff Richard and Fei Yu Qing. By the way, I thought she and John Travolta DID NOT look like high school students at all in Grease, though I enjoyed the show very much. My favourite song from there was Beauty School Drop-out by Frankie Avalon, not exactly one of the show's most famous songs. I guess I liked it because I liked the character Betty Rizo played by Stockard Channing, even though she didn't look like a high school student either.

End of reminiscing.

On a totally different note, well done, Canas and Djokovic, for keeping men's tennis alive by ensuring that it's not a one- or two-man show.

Yes I remember Donny and Marie. Would you believe, first time I saw colour tv was of them in a shopping centre in Taiwan.

I remember also watchig Bonny M at National Stadium. The lead singer practically begged the police to take it easy becos they moved in on some members of audience who tried to get near the stage and dance. I think they really did not enjoy performing in Spore of the distance from the audience and the (yes) metal barriers!

Mr Lam,
Hmmm... I think they still have metal barriers, even at the Indoor Stadium, if I remember correctly.

Hey Working Mum,
You are back after a long silence! Ya, till today, I still think it's odd that there was actually a Paula Abdul concert and that I, of all people, went to it! Early 1990s.

A lesson in love

I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God who is sending a love letter to the world. -Mother Teresa Most of the time my eyes just glaze over when I see article upon article of football news. One caught my glazing eye over the weekend, though - 'De la Cruz - Mother Theresa in boots' , because of the familiar name. Mother Teresa, that is. It was the first time I’d ever heard of this de la Cruz guy, an EPL player who hails from Ecuador (GNI per capita US$2,630; as a comparison, Singapore’s is US$27, 490 – source: BBC country profiles ). His is a great story to illustrate that famous Chinese saying about not forgetting your roots. According to the article, ‘Each month a proportion of that salary (about S$150,000) Reading pay him - be it 10 per cent in January or 20 per cent in February - goes direct to the village’ (where he grew up). (Picture and profile from here ) Here's what he has been credited for: 1. 'The 2002 World Cup,' de la Cruz reflects, 'finan

True train school

‘Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire. These are the things to fear, said the headmaster.’ How would you like to have such a headmaster? I finally re-read (read it first as a teenager) Totto-chan, The Little Girl at the Window , a ‘school story’ by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, translated by Dorothy Britton. Totto-chan is the name Tesuko Kuroyanagi called herself, and the book is about her life during her school days at Tomoe Gakuen. Totto-chan was expelled from her first elementary school because of her ‘disruptive’ behaviour, which included constantly opening and closing her desk top (because she was so thrilled by it), ‘vandalising’ her desk (because there wasn’t enough space on the piece of paper to draw) and standing by the classroom window waiting for street musicians to pass by or talking to swallows. Her mother, although probably alarmed about the

When the best man doesn't win

Speaking of 'sway' spurned lovers, the latest one I've come across is in Love Revolution ( only 12 episodes!), a J show I recently watched. Heroine of the story is pretty, 30-ish Smart Doctor, who is dying to fall in love and get married. She meets Aspiring Actor and Broadcast Journalist (right). She falls for Broadcast Journalist like a ton of bricks. It's obvious from the start (to the audience but not to her) that Aspiring Actor is nuts about her. But... she has fallen for Broadcast Journalist like a ton of bricks already. No doubt, Smart Doctor and Broadcast Journalist must be given credit for their love that stands the tests of time, separation and misunderstanding, but the one who loves most in the show is undoubtedly Mr Aspiring Actor. What he does/does not do because of his undying love for Smart Doctor: Y does not pursue her at first because he is still struggling to survive in this small-time drama group and he knows he doesn't have much to offer Y resp
