Not enough magic

Recently, I discovered at K Box a Karen Mok version of 'When You Wish Upon a Star' . It is a pleasant enough version but, you know, Karen Mok ain't no cricket, and I would associate wishing upon a star with Jiminy Cricket and Tinkerbell, not Karen. That is something like what I feel about Hong Kong Disneyland . It's alright as a theme park but as a Disney theme park, sorry to be so harsh, it cannot make it, lah . Tokyo Disneyland is my only point of reference. The Japanese are really into cute things and theme parks, so the park has a great atmosphere. There's also something about excitable Japanese children and their parents that brings the place to life. As for HK Disneyland, there is some atmosphere but the place is just so Chinese and Chinese aren't exactly well known as lovers of cute things and theme parks. It's weird watching adults scream that they want to take a picture with Snow White as they run towards Cinderella. And with us Singaporeans fo...

Still alive and kicking

It was only when we arrived in Hong Kong that I realised that this is 2007, the 10th anniversary of the handover. For the occasion, they have this theme song that is played over and over and over and over again on TV, at the airport, etc. Entitled, 'Just because you are here', it's a pretty catchy song, featuring Andy, Alan, Hacken, Gillian, Charlene and others. (You can listen to the song and get a clear view of the video here :-) ) I remember, sometime around 1997, we were talking with a Hongkonger we know. This person is an academic, and also happens to judge international tournaments in a particular sport (if I'm not mistaken, the Olympics is on her judging resume) so I'm sure she wouldn't have problems migrating if she wants to. She also has family in Canada and Australia. However, she chose to stay. She said, simply, 'I don't see a need to leave.' I guess it's people like her who have ensured that Hong Kong is still alive and kicking toda...

The Untouchables

Justine I wonder if Justine is now back in that Federer-like position of her pre-viral infection, -injury, -stomach ache days. Ana is is certainly a bright spark but I just don't see her or any of the other young girls (though Ana looks like a giant beside Justine), or older erratic girls, getting near Justine. Their match was really boring, just like Justine's previous finals with Kim and Mary Pierce. It's all well and good for her, but I'm not looking forward to enduring a Federer-like situation on the women's tour as well. Anyway, is Ana going out with Djokovic? They kept panning to him during the match and I was watching it with the (Cantonese) commentary turned down because the boy was asleep in the room and wondering what was going on. Nadal Djokovic is another bright spark and I hope his day to shine will come very soon because although Nadal beating Federer on clay is infinitely less boring to watch than Federer beating anyone on any other surface, it's ...
