Finally watched it, after thinking about watching it for more than a decade. This was so much fun! There was so much fighting, shooting and killing but one puts up with all that since it is, after all, a ‘secret service’ story. There was way too much of the f word, though, and that was extremely tough to put up with. Oh, my poor ears… do Brits really talk like that all the time?? Stiff upper lip and all?
Colin Firth (Galahad/Harry Hart) was the reason why I wanted to watch this and he lives up to every expectation. Charming, understatedly amusing, skilled agent – he was great but I would have preferred him to enunciate a bit more deliberately so that we can hear/understand what he’s saying without having to process the words too much.
I liked Merlin too (Mark Strong) and thought he might be immune to swearing but nope, there he was spitting the f word like the others.
All the characters fit very well in the action and pace, so this was exciting and enjoyable.
A few honourable mentions:
- Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson) was truly annoying and sick
- lovely how Eggsy’s context includes his mum and little sister
- the dog-killing test was clever and unexpected
- Arthur (Michael Caine; a traitor, ultimately – oooh…) and knights in a tailor shop – fantastic idea!
- Roxanne (Sophie Cookson) is the new Lancelot – yay!
Not fond of violence and killing but the fight scenes were spectacular in their own way, especially when the heads exploded.
Dishonourable mention:
- - pairing Eggsy with the Swedish princess was too random!
To end with a question: since there are dropouts from the selection process, the secrecy of Kingsman would always be compromised, no?
