My vote for Ms ELEGANT Asia would go to Maggie Cheung, who happens to be on the cover of the November issue of the Singapore Women's Weekly. Always wondered why issues come out some half a month before the actual month it's supposed to be for. Anyway, have bought a copy of it as am suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms after subscriptions to Elle (Singapore) and Shape (Singapore), started when still working, ran out earlier this year. Life is definitely not the same without the usual heavy dose of 'trash', as some of us call it. Trash is an excellent stress buster for working women. I suppose I don't need it so much now. Other favourites (non-Singapore issues) which I have stopped buying: InStyle, Shape, Elle and Marie Claire . Happily, they are not only available online but also in some NLB branches.
On the theme of ORIGINALITY, I am still wondering, as I did with my last post, how original one's 'work' is if it's based in some way on someone else's. There was this blog post, for example, which spawned a whole host of 'I'm that guy' posts by other bloggers, some of which can be accessed from here. If you read them, some of the spawns are really well-written.
Which also brings to mind Jack Neo's Home Run, aka The Shoe Story (my very original and creative spawn title), which I hear is an unabashed localised version of the acclaimed Children of Heaven. I HEAR, okay, because I've not watched either show, but wasn't Neo lauded for his creativity in that movie? It's different if you are making a movie adaptation of a novel, comic or whatever. Then, you had better stick to a large extent (my view) to the original.
And so, finally, on movie adaptations of novels, I have made the wonderful discovery that there is a 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice, which will premier in Singapore in December. Good news for some of us! Let's see if Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen can give Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth a run for their money as Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. Ah, who cares about Jennifer Ehle?? Colin Firth!!

colin firth's gaze can melt hearts. sigh. incidentally they have chosen some english actor for the role of james bond to replace the suave pierce brosnan. i thought jude law wd make a better choice - or maybe he's too handsome to be one.
read your blog on Victoria Beckham - she's represents the flip side of waht i wd define as elegance, which i agree is embodied by Maggie Cheung, Audrey Hupburn, even Nicole kidman i think. also don't you think VB's husband is looking really tired and hagged recently? watched him on tvplaying football (because the husband said there's nothing else on tv to watch !) my my, he looks balding!
But Colin Firth is still the best...
I have not paid much attention to VB or husband this year. Has he been having too many hairdo changes or what?
Elegance... I think it comes with a certain amount of money and maybe a certain type of lifestyle. Us plebeians without that type of money or lifestyle must strive to be elegant at heart and get enough sleep even though we know we are genetically not porcelain-skin types!
On the subject of Women/Elegance......would like to share with you what i received from a female friend. Here goes (note the point on models in magazines):
Enjoy the following (though it was meant to be for last month)
---------------------------------------
Did you know that it's Beautiful Women Month? I'm supposed to send
this to BEAUTIFUL WOMEN, and you are one of them!!!
Facts On Figures: There are 3 billion women who don't look like
super models and only eight who do.
Did you know Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14?
If Barbie was a real woman, she'd have to walk on all FOURS due to
her proportions!
The average woman weighs 144 pounds, and wears between a size 12-14.
One out of every 4 college-aged women has an eating disorder.
The Models in the magazines are AIRBRUSHED!!! - NOT Perfect!!
A psychological study in 1995 found that 3 minutes spent looking at
a Fashion Magazine caused 70% of women to feel depressed, guilty and
SHAMEFUL!
Models 20 years ago weighed 8% Less than the average Woman.
Today they weigh 23% less......

>> ~~ Beauty of a Woman ~~
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears,
The figure she carries, or the way she combs her hair.
The beauty of a woman must be seen from her eyes,
Because that is the doorway to her heart,
The place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole,
But true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives,
The passion that she shows.
The beauty of a woman
With time, only grows..

An English professor wrote the words: "WOMAN WITHOUT HER MAN IS
NOTHING" on the blackboard, and directed the students to punctuate
it correctly.
The men wrote: "Woman, WITHOUT HER MAN, is nothing."
The women wrote: "WOMAN!! WITHOUT HER, man is nothing!"

The Images of Mother
4 YEARS OF AGE : My Mommy can do anything!
8 YEARS OF AGE : My Mom knows a lot! A whole lot!
12 YEARS OF AGE : My Mother doesn't really know quite everything.
14 YEARS OF AGE : Naturally, Mother doesn't know that, either!
16 YEARS OF AGE : Mother? She's hopelessly old-fashioned.
18 YEARS OF AGE : That old woman? She's way out of date!
25 YEARS OF AGE : Well, she might know a little bit about it.
35 YEARS OF AGE : Before we decide, let's get Mom's opinion.
45 YEARS OF AGE : Wonder what Mom would have thought about it?
65 YEARS OF AGE : Wish I could talk it over with Mom. . .
...in celebration of Women's History Month.
Aha, so maybe Maggie Cheung gets her face airbrushed for a porcelain-like finish?
And that bit about models today weighing 23% less than normal women... that means they all need medical attention.
Ha ha ha... have I been reading too many women's magazines and getting supposedly 'depressed, guilty and shameful'??
